Gingerich - 3 Photographers

In Sook Kim:
The photographer photographed the photos like a diorama setting with people preforming different activities. It appears that the rooms have the same furniture in each photo but arranged in different ways depending on the setting or the activity that the people in the rooms were doing. The lighting in each one differs in terms of what kind of activity is occurring. For example one scene depicts a child playing with a racecar track has lighting was positive, white and green lighting, and serene. And another scene depicts a man sitting alone on his computer and the lighting is darker, Red and white lighting on him, and the rest of the scene in the dark.
The subject matter featured in this book examines the topic of voyeurism and also deals with different details of people’s life. These details have a range of either being purely innocent to severely taboo and off color. The way the photographer arranges the scenes subtly sets up the different activities of people’s life by having “scenes” in an apartment building. The photographs were meant to express different emotions by using lighting, people, and props with the room itself is still the same with light furniture moved around.
I think what makes the images theirs compared to the other photographers that I have seen is that it feels heavily controlled and manipulated which I don’t think is a bad thing. It can be great if it is done right which I think it does. The Photo’s lighting and setting is done artistically which makes the photos feel like a painting and I enjoyed that very much. The way the photographer arranges the scenes like a grid and each window acts like a frame, it was handled really well to make a dreamlike aesthetic.

Michael Thompson:
The photographer uses his camera to take very stylistic photos like those of fashion photographers with intense colors and contrast. The colors of these photos seem to set up an atmosphere that either seems to make the photo calmer or make the photo dramatic. Even if some of the of the photos were in black and white, the photographer makes use of the contrast to his advantage by giving pieces emotion in the same way as with colors. There was use of some celebrities in these photos being used as subjects such as the musician Sting and also Julianne Moore.
There is one clear subject matter, it is about the daunting task of being a Fashion Photographer, in his book “images” he goes on to say that Fashion Photographers have to problem solve issues that occur. Problem solving that have to use creative thinking in order to get the job done and get over obstacles. If that is the case, gives a unique perspective about the profession that people might not have considered in the past. Of course the photos featured in this book reflect the ideal and also has what typically might be featured in a fashion magazine like girls with make up or close ups in details that need highlighting.
I think that what makes these photos his was that there is a focus of how the details come out in each of the photos. For example when even there was a close up of an eye, there is a lot details around the eye and also the brush strokes of the make up to reveal something about the glamour of the fashion photography genre.

Peter Bialobrzeski:
The photographer seems to make use of the shutter speed to show motion in the daily life of the people in these cities. The photographer seems to take photos either from the eye level to show a depth of field and also from high places to show scale. I think there is a lot opportunities to give the viewer different emotions depending on what angle the cities are being viewed at. When the camera is at eye level, it makes the viewer feel like they are part of the scene. When the camera is at a higher place, it makes the viewer feel like they are on top.
The subject matter that the photographer is trying to express with his photos is the differences of social class in various Asian countries. It does so by highlighting parts where they depict slum areas, the urban areas, and also depicts the high end areas which bring about a different kind of contrast. I like it when the contrast is in different forms other than visual and makes the viewers think about the subject.

I think what makes these pictures his is that even if the photos are detailed beautifully. I noticed that the colors were muted, not so much to be dramatic and stylized but enough to be noticed with continued viewings. I am not sure why this might have happened since if you want to communicate a message you would want to highlight colors. But I think that the muted colors offer subtlety and make the pictures feel serene and calm which makes the cities in the photos feel peacefully which might be the intention. The photographer also seems to make each photograph by looking a road and not having it perpendicular to the camera frame.
