Malia George

One of the photographers I chose was Walker Evans a documentary photographer who was most prominent in the 20th century.  He was a ‘street photographer’ who photographed ordinary things like people and signs in a gritty way which made the images more meaningful and memorable.  For his portrait images the peoples facial expressions and features are really what speaks to the viewer.  He photographed in a way that made you feel what the way that person in the image was feeling.  Evans is best known for the Farm Security Administration documentation of effects of the Great Depression.  He originally was a writer at Time Magazine and editor at Fortune magazine which is how he was to tell the story of his subjects through an image. This writing background added a more poetic feel to the simple things he photographed and bold meaning to his portraits. All of his images were in black and white.  All of his images no matter how simple was still very powerful.

Another photographer I chose was Terry Richardson a fashion and portrait photographer. I think he is really unique photographer.  His photographs are very distinct, he makes images head-on with a direct flash and against a white wall.  In all of his photographs the models are acting like themselves, which is really different.  In his celebrity portraits the people are seen in a different light its no longer about the flawlessness about them that they are usually photographed in but its about  them and they seem much more comfortable.  He has a tendency to make an image really sexual but keeping the model comfortable during the process. Richardson has two very distinct things he's known for his glasses, and red plaid shirts he sometimes lets his subjects wear the glasses in some of the photographs making it his own.

My last photographer is landscape photographer. In his images color is the most striking thing to me. He was an environmentalist which shaped his viewpoint while making images.  He wanted to show the natural beauty of nature and show a reason why it is important to preserve it. In some of the landscape photos there was usually one main focal point that he would focus right up on leaving very little room for a background but the whole image was filled leaving no empty space.Details of the subject was very important along with color.  The images would also seem slightly off centered due to its natural shape even though it was directly placed in the center.  Other images really showed movement across the page, having many different areas of focus and very striking details.
