Styles of three photographers

Photographer : James Welling
Name of Book : Flowers
All the photographs are multicolored flowers. The photographer arranged a few handfuls blossoms to pieces of eight times ten film in the darkroom, and makes the exposure with his black and white enlarger. These photographs cannot print normally and directly. He worked with his printer to come up with a way to introduce multiple colors into prints.
He focusses on the shape of these flowers. Color changes naturally. People can see a color transition on each leaf. Light control and contrast are so powerful. It is like every flower on the photograph is sharing the sunshine. There is contrast between colorful flowers and white background that is easy to highlight the bright colors. Some of his photographs show several different and beautiful colors on a group of flowers. Some of these photographs show a same color but in different levels of color, such as deeper blue, blue, sky blue, and light blue. All of his photographs have interesting compositions. There are not too static, or too dynamic composition, more movement. They are all over the page, not only in the center. It is really easy to recognize those photographs are all in the same style that is colorful flowers with no details, dynamic compositions of a group of flowers, and the light makes them a little bit blurry and nicely contrast.

Photographer : Patrick Weidmann
Subject : Dense stuff
Patrick Weidemann’s photograph shows a world in which the design of objects and settings is the sole horizon. His photographs are interesting that he translates three-dimensinal realism into the bi-dimentional space of the photograph. Patrick has many photographs that contain dense stuff, such as many bulbs together, many toys together, and cartoon characters together. I think he uses a small aperture to make every element very clear and specific on the photograph. He also has portrait photographs. I think he uses a bigger aperture to focus on the character, and then makes the background more blurry. He chooses different angle shot and focal length. The photographs show the distance between objects and draw attention to all the element that to be more significant. Unlike advertising images, which using a desirable absolute., Patrick uses the object as a primary enabling the viewer to grasp a reality that overflows the photographic frame, both physically and metaphorically.
These photographs look gorgeous and glossy, because he uses all the filters at his disposal to recreate reality. The objects are sometimes barely recognizable in blurred photographs. Some of those photographs are extremely close up. Overall, I am very enjoying finding more element in his photograph. His photographs really contain much information that is interesting to explore and find every element.

Photographer: Joyce Tenneson
Name of Book : Illuminations

Joyce Tenneson uses light to do with her photographs. I think she used a bigger aperture to focus on the model in order to have a blurry background. When I saw the model actually does have a little bit burry, I realized she must use some special process to develop her photograph. In fact, she uses polaroid film with a 24x30 view camera. The important step is she pots exposed photograph in freezer so color does not develop fully. That is why all of her photographs show a blurry feeling just like dreaming.

The photograph all shows the soft light and the beautiful curve of body shape. All the photographs’ background is blurry with a dark color, and the light is so soft that makes the whole photograph just like a dream. The combination of light is so thoughtful. It gives a sober power to the person who was photographed. It leads people want to think deeply about what is the meaning of those photographs. These photographs are not intended to provoke memory or preserve the flesh from the past time. The photographs are not about beauty, even though I think they are so beautiful. The photographs are about soul, how it appears delicately, in the fold of an arm, the bend of a back. These photographs are about the godliness of human persistence. It is a wonderful idea to present them in a hazy way and also try to separate them from some normal memory photographs by using light. There is no contrast of light on her photographs. She put light on any part of body, such as put light above the head of the model. This is my favorite photographer and I summarize her style is “the soul of the dream”. That indicates the content and blurry style of those photographs.
